Calgary’s population continues to lead the nation as economic and commercial opportunities improve
- Calgary is benefitting from a population boom with annual growth rates projected to lead all other major cities in Canada. Interprovincial migration and permanent residency have been the biggest contributors to this population increase, with 9% projected growth over the next three years.
- The prospects of lower business taxes, lower cost of goods, and increasing job availability has brought about an economy of opportunity within Alberta in recent years. Calgary specifically has been experiencing great benefits from this trend. Interest rates are on the decline and inflationary pressures are decreasing, reaching a 2% soft-landing inflation target in August 2024.
- More commercial real estate projects are entering the pipeline, including the new BMO Centre, Arts Commons Building, and the Scotiabank Arena. In addition to office-to-residential conversions, the City of Calgary is working with the private industry to identify other buildings for repurpose into affordable housing, giving support to existing housing needs and for newer entrants.
